Polish healthcare trends

Increasing demand for medical services and rising prices in the private sector are the main trends in Polish healthcare.

In Poland, you have to be surprisingly healthy to be able to get treatment. This thesis perfectly reflects the specifics of the Polish medical services market, the main feature of which are queues. Let’s figure out what is the reason for this?

The demographic situation in Poland is changing – if 20 years ago the group of people over 65 in the total population was about 13%, then by 2030, according to the forecast of the Main Statistical Office, every third Pole will be a pensioner.

In addition, migration processes significantly affect the demographic situation. According to the migracje.gov.pl portal, more than 500,000 migrants currently live in Poland, which is about 1% of the country’s population.

The largest group (more than half of all immigrants) are citizens of Ukraine. Moreover, if in 2016 a little more than 79 thousand Ukrainians lived in Poland, then in 2020 there were almost 246 thousand of them. Other significant groups of foreigners living in Poland are citizens of Belarus, Georgia and Russia.

The aging of the population and the intensification of the process of immigration determine the growing needs of society in the field of healthcare and cause an increase in the demand for medical services, including those provided by staff serving the patient in their native language. The main consequence of these changes is the increase in health care costs.

Thus, according to the Polish Statistics Office, in 2020, total health spending increased by PLN 17.8 billion compared to 2019, i.e. by 12.1%.

Please note that we are talking not only about public, but also private expenses, when a patient pays for a medical service out of his own pocket.

Thus, in 2020, direct household spending on health care amounted to PLN 32.2 billion, which is PLN 2.5 billion (8.5%) more than in 2019.

The need for medical services is growing, this is eloquently evidenced by statistics – if in 2020, 287 million consultations were provided to the inhabitants of Poland, then in 2021 – 316.7 million.
